As you might know, the City Council has decided to allow the conversion of a former nursing home at this location to be a homeless shelter. This effort is being undertaken in cooperation with King County, and will be managed by the non-profit Lake City Partners.
It is being designed as a "low barrier" shelter, meaning that there will be minimal screening for previous criminal history, mental health issues or current drug use. Advocates explain that this approach helps people in need more easily agree to receive help in such a facility.
There will be space for some 60 residents, most having a separate room. Also, unlike many shelters residents will not have to leave each morning - and might be allowed to stay for perhaps many months.
This particular facility is designed to serve the northern part of King County, including Shoreline, Kenmore and Bothell. By a recent survey there were estimated to be some 50 homeless folks in these areas.
